Blackletter

This project involved the design and development of a custom blackletter typeface named Herald, created through a multi-stage process beginning with construction studies on graph paper to establish foundational strokes using key letters (n, o, i, h, y, a). The design was then refined through hand-drawn iterations, expanding into a full character set including uppercase, lowercase, numerals, and punctuation. The final phase involved digitizing and refining the typeface in Glyphs to create a functional, usable font. Herald was designed to feel imposing and architectural, with exaggerated high ascenders and shortened descenders to enhance its vertical tension. The overall intent was to balance intimidation with a storybook quality, resulting in a typeface that feels both authoritative and characterful, with a name that suggests leadership while also carrying a subtle, personal identity.

Pencil To Paper

The very beginning of Herald. Just graphite on graph paper to establish the general form of the strokes.

Pen To Paper

Next, all letter forms were drawn with a 4.5mm parallel pen to scale. After, it was scanned in to bring to digital.

Paper to Computer

All handwritten pages were brought into glyphs and built into Herald. If you desire the typeface, the button below will grant you it.
